3 emerging artists to follow in 2024

The emerging contemporary artists spotted at the TONO 2024 art festival.

Young prodigies in the artistic sphere continue to flourish all over the world; this year, it was at the TONO art festival that L'OFFICIEL went in search of the latest names to discover. "TONO 2024 was this year an exhibition guided by the theme of transformation   with many artists exploring the materiality of elements such as mud, water, sweat and pixels in the digital realm — and often metamorphosis through and with these materials, such as the physical and historical reconstructions of mud in the film ( The Dam, 2022 ) and the installation ( Of Men and Gods and Mud, 2022 ) by Ali Cherri, the construction of worlds in the new commission by Gabriel Massan ( Continuity Flaws: Rumors of a Leak, 2023- ), and the physical and spiritual transformations of Joshua Serafin ( VOID, 2022- )", reveals the curator of the exhibition Samantha Ozer about the approach of the three emerging artists of the moment.

Ali Cherri (born in Lebanon) is a Paris-based artist whose artistic practice for three decades has spanned cinema, performance, drawing and installations, questioning the ways in which political violence diffuses into people's bodies and into the physical and cultural landscape. Through the moving image and accidental journeys of cultural artifacts, the artist discovered in the visual analysis of the political construction of history, the underlying intimate relationship between narratives of cultural value, configuration of the past and the violence itself. Recent solo exhibitions include Humble and quiet and soothing as mud at the Swiss Institute, New York ; Dreamless Sleep at GAMeC, Bergamo (2023); Considered at the Giacometti Foundation, Paris (2024), Those who watch us at CAC La Traverse, France (2023), If you prick us do we not bleed at the National Gallery, London and at the Herbert Art Gallery, Coventry (2022) .   In 2022, he received the Silver Lion for his participation in the main exhibition of the Biennale Arte 2022, entitled The Milk of Dreams .

Gabriel Massan

Gabriel Massan (born in Brazil) is a multidisciplinary artist. Combining storytelling and worldbuilding, Massan creates worlds that simulate and narrate situations of inequality within the Latin American experience. As part of a conceptual practice called "fictional archaeology", and working across 3D animation, digital sculpture, games, sound and interactive installations, the artist challenges distorted conceptions of what we call the “third world” while studying the possibilities of a subversive otherness. Recent exhibitions include WORLDBUILDING: Gaming and Art in the Digital Age (Julia Stoschek Collection, 2022; Center Pompidou-Metz, 2023); Cannon! (Frieze No.9 Cork Street, 2022) and Possible Agreements (Mendes Wood DM, 2022). In 2023, Gabriel presented his first solo exhibitions, starting with the multi-part project Third World: The Bottom Dimension at the Serpentine Galleries, followed by Continuity Flaws at Outernet London.

Joshua Serafin

Joshua Serafin (born in the Philippines) is a multidisciplinary artist who combines dance, performance, visual arts and choreography. He is a house artist of Viernulvier during the 2023-2027 season. Exploring themes of transmigration and queer politics, Joshua centers his practice on otherness, aiming to translate ideas of otherness and otherworldly narratives into embodied performances and forms of speculation. Sob travail has been presented internationally, notably at the Esplanade in Singapore, at the BIT Teatergarasjen in Norway, at the Anti Festival in Finland, at Nightshift in Ostend, at Beursschowburg in Brussels, at Tai Kwun Contemporary in Hong Kong, at Haus Der Kulturen der Welt HKW, and in the coming months at the HAU Hebbel am Ufer in Berlin. The artist was officially invited to participate in the 60th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition, under the direction of Adriano Pedrosa.
