8 historical dramas you should add to your watch list soon

We list 8 period dramas that you should give a chance.

We know, like us, you watched all the episodes of Bridgerton season 3 in one sitting as soon as it was released. It's possible that you missed the period romances and magnificent atmospheres, but don't worry, there are many historical productions that can fill this gap until a new Bridgerton season.

Read on for romantic period dramas that you can watch in one go.

The Buccaneers

The series is created by British comedian Katherine Jakeways, who adapts Edith Wharton’s unfinished and posthumous novel of the same name. Set in the 1870s, “The Buccaneers” follows five wealthy American women who travel to London to impress a British aristocrat.

The Gilded Age

“The Gilded Age,” which began airing in 2022 and is still ongoing, takes place amidst a turbulent social structure in 1882 New York. We watch the series, whose third season I am eagerly awaiting, from the perspective of the lead role played by Emmy award-winning Carry Coon.

The Great

The series “The Great” tells the story of Catherine II, known as “Catherine the Great”, played by Elle Fanning, who defeats her husband, Emperor Peter III, by plotting to kill him in order to seize his crown. This production in the grotesque genre has an alternative history narrative, absurd comedy, satire and sarcastic language.

Gentleman Jack

The two-season “Gentleman Jack” is the heartwarming story of “Anne Lister,” who sets out to restore an estate she inherited from her uncle in Yorkshire in the 1830s. Suranne Jones plays the role outside the established norms in a society where it was uncommon for a woman to hold landed status.

Dickinson

Set in the 19th century but presenting a modern historical narrative with the atmosphere and language of the series universe, the series tells the story of the love of poet Emily Dickinson for her best friend and brother's fiancée Sue. Emily is stuck between her sexual identity and gender roles, while also struggling with her parents' efforts to bring her together with a man. The character's only escape is the time she spends with Sue and the time she spends writing poetry.

Vanity Fair

Adapted from William Makepeace Thackeray's 1848 novel of the same name, Vanity Fair tells the story of Becky Sharp's rise from the lower classes to the top of English society. Olivia Cooke plays the heroine of this years-long social climb against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars.

Harlots

Set in 18th century London, “Harlots” tells the story of a brothel environment that only serves the rich and upper class. The character “Margaret Wells”, played by Samantha Morton, moves between the world of sex work and the hope of giving her daughters a better life in family life in the series that ran between 2017 and 2019.

Victoria

“Victoria,” which ran for three seasons and ended in 2019, follows the reign of Queen Alexandrina Victoria, played by Jenna Coleman. The series portrays a magnificent yet scandalous portrait of the British monarchy, with its ostentations, costumes, the Queen’s lust for power, and her feelings for Lord Melbourne.
