Cassina: exterior design
Cassina unveils a new outdoor version of the iconic Utrecht armchair by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, made with materials and coverings designed for outdoor environments.
The “Utrecht” armchair by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld is one of Cassina's most recognizable pieces. In its play of symmetries resonates a clear and dynamic graphic rhythm, marked by the juxtaposition of orthogonal elements. Designed for the outdoors, its new contemporary interpretation, “Utrecht XL Outdoor”, preserves the incomparable aesthetic of the original model. Imbued with references to the De Stijl movement of which the Dutch architect and designer was one of the main exponents, it gives shape to a comfortable refuge perfect for reading a book, listening to music or simply relaxing outdoors.
In terms of style, the seat is adorned with new textures and patterns inspired by Mediterranean landscapes which are based on the warm and evocative notes of terracotta, the soothing shades of green and the intense hues of turquoise. The armchair is also available in a version in “Favignana” fabric featuring floral patterns made using a jacquard process to create a real visual spectacle. Its geometries are also embellished with visible zips, available in five colours to match or combine with the new palette. This detail, combined with the Velcro fasteners hidden at the bottom of the seat and armrests, allows the covering – which is made up of a single piece – to be completely removed without dismantling its various elements.
In terms of comfort, its soft padding in recycled Pet wadding is protected by a water-repellent canvas which wraps the interior metal structure and the okoume wood armrests to prevent water from penetrating the chair. The raised, adjustable feet also allow the model to be better placed in open spaces and transform them into luxurious outdoor lounges.
