Louis Ghost: The Invisible Friend

Designed by Philippe Starck and Kartell's absolute best-seller, the Louis Ghost chair has just celebrated its twentieth anniversary. Back to what makes the essence of this unbeatable must-have.

Twenty years of existence may seem like a lot in a world where new products follow one another at a steady pace. On the other hand, this is very little compared to the origins of the Louis Ghost armchair, which date back to the 18th century. Its author, Philippe Starck, did not however seek to modernize a particular style but rather drew on our collective memory to bring out lines likely to be perceived as familiar by everyone. These are characterized by a medallion backrest extended by thin armrests, all supported by elegantly tapered legs.

However, this portrait would not be complete without mentioning its transparency, made possible thanks to Kartell's expertise in the work of polycarbonate and which leaves the gaze the choice of slipping on the Louis Ghost or stopping there. Significant progress since leaving the headquarters in 2002, this plastic is now produced in an eco-responsible way from industrial cellulose and paper waste.

Quickly iconic, the chair will know great moments of glory: in 2007, it accompanies Pope Benedict XVI in a moment of great spirituality. We will also see Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, seated next to Anna Wintour, attending a fashion show with her. It even gains in cachet thanks to the artists and designers who have brought it even more originality, extravagance and who have personalized it, from Antonio Marras to Piero Lisoni via Jeremy Scott or even Stefano Arienti. A timeless chair that we have also seen in the greatest theaters and museums in the world and which has even taken place in the Colosseum. That is to say if in two decades, Louis Ghost has already had a full life...
