At the origins: Balmain's Spring Summer 2023
Olivier Rousteing presents Balmain's Spring Summer 2023 at Paris Fashion Week , a Haute Couture collection and a Ready-To-Wear, inspired by the shapes of nature and distant traditions.
Balmain's Haute Couture Spring Summer 2023 collection represents a refined test of mastery by Olivier Rousteing : the clothes bring to mind an ancestral idea, with these unusual and at the same time primitive shapes. Perhaps taken from distant cultures to the western one, perhaps derived from natural elements, these shapes are alien but at the same time familiar.
The models parading on the catwalk seem almost invested with some magical power. A dress is completely made of pieces of bark welded together and so is a bandeau top; short dresses are created with wicker weaves; a long dress is entirely covered with colored feathers in shades of brown, another, perhaps the most beautiful of the collection, has a chain mail with very large golden rings welded to the center of the figure.

For Ready-To-Wear Olivier Rousteing creates a collection for the French fashion house founded in 1954 that recalls and develops the themes presented in Haute Couture. A large part of this collection is in fact inspired by forms that seem to come from an early Cubist Picasso, almost primordial. And even if the fabrics are colored with prints depicting baroque paintings or colors reminiscent of fire, the shapes remain the same throughout the collection, creating a common thread that gives homogeneity to it. Saturated with drapery, embroidery, openwork, weaves (a dress is made entirely of fabric twisted and then knotted), this collection rests entirely on footwear with vertiginous platforms, no matter whether they are masculine or feminine looks.
