Zimmermann breathes a cinematic spirit into its Resort 2025 collection

References to the 7th art and the stars of our adolescence meet the modern fabrics and sophisticated silhouettes of the Australian House for its Resort 2025 collection.

“I was thinking about the influence that 80s coming-of-age films and actors of the era had on my friends and I when I was at design school in Sydney. Movies like St Elmo's Fire, The Breakfast Club and Rose Candy . We often took inspiration from Winona Ryder, Lisa Bonet or Molly Ringwald for our style. We would rummage through vintage stores and create looks that mixed old and new, men's and women's clothing - that was our weekend entertainment before going out. For this Resort season, we took the style and good humor of these films and tried to bring them together in a fresh, fun and modern collection. We worked with soft floral prints, leopard prints on linen and silk organza for ball gowns, technical lace prints — as well as lace as a key texture in looks and shoes. There are lots of little movie-inspired icons running through our details—from diaries, cassettes, records, and lipstick —that make their way into key art and charms. Our denim features more masculine influences with biker and varsity jackets and oversized jeans. The suit nods to exaggerated shoulders and twist details. I loved those movies — I still do. They were fun and the style was fun for me” – reveals artistic director, Nicky Zimmermann , in a press release regarding the genesis of the Zimmermann Resort 2025 collection.

To open the show, a silhouette comprised of lace biker shorts and an oversized lace pirate shirt reinterpreted the style of '80s icons through a modern eye. Collegiate inspiration can be found in dark denim varsity jackets and flirty dresses; embellished neckline t-shirts worn with cool denim shapes or short skirts and a healthy dose of pearls. A technical lace print features medallions and initials, while another graphic print draws inspiration from diary excerpts and teenage doodles about crushes and daydreams. There's an undeniable sense of fun in this collection, resulting in modern ball gowns for every occasion. Corseted leopard, exaggerated hand-draped shoulders, fabric rosettes, sculptural peplums and knitted lace bodysuits are all signs of celebration, which can also be worn with chunky earrings and sneakers as a version daytime. Oversized outerwear — boxy blazers, jacquard coats, leather jackets and technical trenches — are layered over mini bustiers, a mint bra, tight shorts and very pretty mini skirts with pointy-toe mules and sheer socks — for a sexy, playful result. Finally, denims – high waisted, faded – and knits are the pillars of the collection for a versatile season that you will want to reissue endlessly.

From a chromatic point of view, pastels and floral paintings dominate — and bring a feminine softness to the floating and transparent maxi dresses, but also to the straight dresses with scalloped edges, encrusted with diamonds.
