Take a bow: the classic hair accessory makes a comeback in Ibiza.
Fresh from the Vivienne Westwood show at Paris Fashion Week, hair stylist Faye Browne tells us why ribbons and bows are making waves from LA to Ibiza.
Ribbons have re-emerged as a quintessential accessory in 2024, a beauty trend that transcends time. For F/W 2024 I've created ribbon looks at several shows, including yesterday's Vivienne Westwood spectacular with the team of Sam McKnight. The classic look ties neatly to the history of Ibiza, where for centuries ribbons were intricately woven into the fabric of local culture. Worn by single women, the number of ribbons is thought to have symbolised the number of their admirers. Additionally, among the oldest known pieces of Ibicenco clothing is la gonella, a dress that featured a petticoat paired with a snug upper garment crafted from black wool. The ample sleeves were covered in silver or brightly coloured ribbons, showcasing the elegant embroidery skills of the time.
Now making waves on the international stage, ribbons and bows have made a serious comeback. At the recent 2024 Grammy Awards, singer Lana del Rey wore a maximalist black bow paired with bangs to complete the perfect statement hair look.
Over in the Balearics, Annie Doble of Annie’s Ibiza – queen of the timeless vintage look - is no stranger to a classic hair bow. She recently launched a collection of sumptuous, hand-made, velvet hair accessories which can be found in both her Ibiza and Carnaby Street stores.
The bow serves as the perfect accessory for elegantly pulling back hair in the spring sunshine. I use Sam McKnight’s Easy Up Do texturizing spray for added volume and movement, creating an effortless ‘undone’ look. Tied in a loose ponytail, woven into braids, or used to secure a sleek up-do, the bow adds a touch of grace to any look.
