WhoMadeWho – the band of the moment?

Danish indie-electronic band WhoMadeWho are known for blending indie rock, electronic music and pop to spellbinding effect. Formed in Copenhagen in 2003, the band consists of Tomas Høffding (bass, vocals), Tomas Barfod (drums), and Jeppe Kjellberg (guitar, vocals). After winning the Best Organic House award at last week’s DJ Awards in Ibiza, L’OFFICIEL IBIZA caught up with Tomas Barfod to talk creativity and cult collaborations.

Your live performances have a unique blend of electronic music and live instrumentation. How do you approach combining these elements to create such a distinct experience?

TB: We aim to bring the energy of live instruments into the precision of electronic music, always trying to blend the organic and digital seamlessly. It’s about creating something that feels both alive and perfectly timed.

WhoMadeWho’s sound spans a wide range of genres. How do you maintain that balance between staying innovative while keeping a cohesive identity?

TB: We embrace experimentation but always anchor it to our core sound. It’s about pushing boundaries while staying true to the vibe that defines us as a band.

Collaboration seems to be a big part of your journey. Can you tell us about a recent or memorable collaboration that pushed your creativity in a new direction?

TB: Our work with Rampa really opened new doors for us. His approach to sound and production challenged us to rethink how we build our tracks, adding a deeper, more textured layer to our music. Lately, our partnership with Adriatique has been essential.

As a trio, how do you manage creative differences, and how does that dynamic help shape your music?

TB: Creative differences are inevitable, but they push us to find better solutions. It’s the friction that helps create something fresh, where each member brings their strengths and we meet in the middle.

Ibiza has such a rich musical history. How has performing on the island influenced your sound or live performances?

TB: Ibiza has a unique and contagious energy. Playing there, you feel the deep connection to dance music, which pushes us to evolve our sound and create more immersive live experiences. Also personally the island is dear to us, we meet many inspiring and fun people there.

The energy in Ibiza is unique, especially with its mix of underground and mainstream. How do you tailor your sets to the vibe of the island's clubs and parties?

TB: We read the crowd and adapt the set to flow with the room’s energy, but we lean a bit towards a more "party vibe" for our Ibiza sets...It’s about balancing the underground elements with moments that everyone can connect to, no matter their backgrounds.

Can you tell us about a particularly memorable or transformative set you've played in Ibiza? What made it stand out?

TB: One set at closing Circoloco stands out—the crowd’s energy was electric, and we felt completely in sync with the room. We usually don't like playing last because we are a bit melodic and vocal based in our sound but something really unique happened in the main room between us and the crowd that night.

The island attracts people from all over the world. How do you approach creating a set that resonates with such a diverse crowd?

TB: We try to build sets that transcend genres and appeal to emotions. The key is creating a journey that anyone can feel, regardless of where they come from or what they usually listen to.
