The 2023 edition of Art Basel in Basel will feature 284 of the world's leading galleries, showcasing works of the highest quality across all media, including painting, sculpture, photography , and digital artwork. 21 first-time attendees will join the strong lineup of European exhibitors and galleries from around the world. In addition to the presentations of the Galleries, Feature, Statements and Edition sections, Art Basel 2023 will present 76 large-scale installations and performances in Unlimited, while the Kabinett sector will debut at the Basel edition after the one in Hong Kong, inside the exhibitors' stands. Around Basel 24 site-specific public art projects will be part of the Parcours section.
Unlimited
Unlimited is the sector of Art Basel where large-scale projects are welcomed. Monumental installations, colossal sculptures, boundless wall paintings, complete photographic series and wide-ranging video projections. Unlimited will be curated for the third time by Giovanni Carmine, director of the Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen.
Parcours
With 24 site-specific projects and performances, this year Parcours will be presented under the theme "Word of Mouth" and will reflect on the current state of making art as a means of expression translating social and political communication. Parcours is curated by Samuel Leuenberger, founder of the non-profit exhibition spaces SALTS in Birsfelden and Country SALTS in Bennwil.
Cabinet
The Kabinett , the sector dedicated to thematic presentations, housed in a separate section within the gallery stands, will make its debut at the Basel fair with 13 presentations.
Movie
The Film section program - a week of film projects curated by Flipa Ramos - will begin on Monday 12 June with Laura Poitras' All the Beauty and Bloodshed, focusing on the life, work and activism of artist Nan Goldin and the his efforts to hold Sackler-owned Purdue Pharma responsible for the opioid epidemic in the United States, while also exposing the Sackler family's patronage of prominent cultural institutions.
