Lack of exercise, too much sitting and a poor diet can quickly lead to uncomfortable water retention. As a result, some try to counteract this with a radical diet in order to quickly lose the unwanted love handles. While extreme dietary changes can provide quick results, the results don't last forever and before you know it, the pounds are back. There are much healthier and more sustainable methods to do something good for your body. The latest trend to reduce swelling and flush toxins from the body is called "Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage Massage". The wonder drug, which is part of the standard beauty routine in Brazil, has become increasingly popular in the US in recent years after a number of supermodels and celebrities started posting their before and after pictures. Some well-known celebrities go to Flavia Lanini, probably the best-known Brazilian entrepreneur who offers the treatment. Her clientele includes Hailey Bieber, Paris Hilton, Candice Swaneopoel and the list goes on. So is this the celebrity's secret weapon for firm skin in no time? Are a few firm hand squeezes really enough to wipe away accumulated fluid and cellulite?

What is lymphatic drainage?

Lymphatic drainage actually has its origins in physiotherapy for the treatment of lymphatic and lipoedema patients. In an interview for Forbes, Flavia Lanini explains that the benefits of drainage also apply to healthy people. Lymphatic drainage is a manual massage technique that affects the lymphatic system and stimulates it to work quickly by transporting the lymph to the lymph nodes. She also explains that its main function is to speed up the removal of the fluid that has accumulated between the cells and its decomposition residues, to direct it into the capillary vessels and to transport it away through targeted movements. Therefore, according to her, the benefits of drainage lie primarily in the transport and removal of fluids and substances from the swollen area, which are then returned to the bloodstream; Drainage directs and increases lymph flow, promoting the faster evacuation of excess interstitial fluid; it improves the immune system through the important elimination of toxins; in combination with other treatments, it helps to reduce edematous cellulite and brings physical and mental relaxation, thus also promoting the immediate well-being of the patient.

The Brazilian method takes up drainage massage techniques, which, according to Lanini, are supplemented by massage contouring and myofascial release for ultimate slimming effects and wellness treatments.
