Sustainable skincare can mean a whole host of things: Maybe the packaging is recyclable, or the ingredients sourced support local farmers and merchants. Whatever the advocacy is, it makes buying beauty even more fun than usual. Through sustainability and science, Kiehl's is one of the few brands promising responsible formulation.

It’s been nearly 170 since their first apothecary opened in Manhattan’s East Village. From the very beginning, Kiehl’s claims their consistent commitment to transparency, sustainability, and responsibility. While they’ve outgrown their humble roots, the skincare brand continues the heritage of formulating a better future. More than a mission, Kiehl’s reduces their environmental impact with renewable ingredients and responsible packaging. With the environment’s well-being in mind, 98% of Kiehl’s formulas are made with 3 renewable ingredients – meaning they can be replenished or regrown. The raw ingredients sources support responsible farming practices in over 600 communities worldwide. Moreover, Kiehl’s manufacturing reduced water waste by 78% and over 80% of their packaging was made with recycled materials.

One of the brand’s responsibly-formulated favorites is Kiehl’s Rare Earth Collection stars Amazon white clay – a mineral-rich form of kaolin clay sustainably sourced from the mouth of the Amazon river. After fairly trading with the workers who collect this “Magic Earth” clay, Khiel’s formulated the product without mineral oil, fragrances, or silicone. Another one of their responsibly-produced products is Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate which is made with 100% renewable ingredients, including lavender essential oil and evening primrose oil.

Of course, sustainability and responsibility doesn’t end with Kiehl’s: You can do your part, too. Investing in refillables, limiting water usage, and becoming wary of ingredients could be the start of healthy habits and a future made better.
