The Space Habitat at the Institut auf dem Rosenberg
The Swiss school Institut auf dem Rosenberg, together with the Danish architectural bureau SAGA Space Architects, has presented a polymer structure that mimics an extraterrestrial environment.
The Experimental Lab will help students explore and actively shape the future of humanity on our planet and beyond. Designed to fit inside Elon Musk's SpaceX Starship rocket, the 7-meter tower made from sustainable materials is the world's tallest 3D-printed polymer structure.
RSH will be a research site where students can learn about the basic conditions and design that humanity needs to thrive both on Earth and in space. The project is based on innovation focused on the planet and its needs, and teaches students not to be afraid of new technologies and to use them for the benefit of future generations.
Over the course of two years , SAGA Space Architects and the school's students (ages 6 to 18) collaborated closely to develop the design of the project, which began with a creative collaboration during a simulated SAGA Space lunar mission in Greenland. Inspired by this experience, the students decided to continue working with the architecture firm and designed a habitat for a robot named Spot by Boston Dynamics .
The outer shell of the Rosenberg Space Habitat was 3D printed on a large format printer in Milan, while the inner structure was made in collaboration with high-tech companies Camozzi and Ingersol . The use of resin in 3D printing is revolutionary and more versatile than other 3D printing materials. The Institut auf dem Rosenberg used a UV stabilizer, resulting in a flexible yet durable recyclable material that can be reprinted into a different structure if needed.
The three-story project can accommodate a team of two, and students use it as a research center and participate in immersive learning workshops that spark creative thinking. The first level is reserved for hygiene, laboratory research and workshops for the use of robots from other partners such as ABB for 3D or multifunctional robots; the second is for work, leisure and entertainment; the third is for solitude and relaxation. An important place in the design is occupied by mental well-being and ecology, therefore, all spaces and furniture from Vitra are multifunctional and allow you to comfortably engage in various activities in a limited space.
The Rosenberg Space Habitat (RSH) experiments are studying the human condition through tools for testing hardware and software applications, as well as through monitoring tools for remote flight control systems. Students will explore the importance of sensory stimulation in confined spaces during missions through light, auditory and olfactory installations. Experience-based learning projects develop systems thinking skills through working with mechatronics, learning about communication, and learning more about artificial intelligence.
About Institut auf dem Rosenberg
Founded in 1889 , the Institut auf dem Rosenberg is a Swiss boarding school that offers a holistic approach to educating future leaders of the 21st century. Passionate teachers in the process of teaching children aged 6 to 18 pay special attention to the skills and knowledge that will help students in the future. The school's unique program is designed so that students strive not only for academic success, but also develop their talents and horizons. In a rapidly changing world, the evolution of education is more relevant than ever. While no one can predict the future, in a world increasingly driven by technology, the Institut auf dem Rosenberg offers to develop soft skills such as creativity, intuition and communication. Instead of simply preparing students to succeed in exams, the school has created its own Rosenberg International Curriculum (RIC®) educational program by adhering to a rigid curriculum. It not only gives knowledge, but also helps to prepare for international exams: International Baccalaureate (IB) , A-Levels and Advanced Placement (APs) . RIC® is accredited to and widely recognized for its academic interdisciplinary approach, which allows students to prove their qualifications much sooner.
About SAGA Space Architects
