Layer by layer: How to style the transition period
Autumn season: cool in the morning, pleasantly warm at midday and cool again in the evening. Now is the time again when you constantly ask yourself what to wear. The answer: layered look (but stylish)!
The transitional period is both a blessing and a curse in terms of fashion. You may look forward to the cozy looks, but when the days get colder and winter is still a long way off, it's not that easy to find the right outfit. The golden rule: layering, i.e. cleverly wearing items of clothing on top of each other. With the right strategy, you can get through the autumn in style and comfort without sweating or freezing.
#1 The basis: A good start is half the battle
Every layering outfit starts with a solid base. In autumn, light, breathable materials that feel comfortable on the skin are recommended. A classic cotton shirt or a long-sleeved shirt made of silk or merino wool are ideal. These natural fabrics keep you warm without overheating and adapt well to the temperature - important when the weather changes during the day.
Make sure that the base of your outfit is simple and neutral. White, beige, grey or black are ideal as they can be effortlessly combined with the other layers.
#2 The second layer: warmth with style
Now it gets exciting: The second layer can be a little more eye-catching. Here you can play with colour, structure and pattern. A turtleneck sweater or a loose shirt made of wool or cashmere not only gives the outfit warmth, but also a certain elegance. Particularly trendy this season: leopard print and autumnal colours such as dark brown, burgundy, olive green or mustard yellow.
It is important that this layer is easy to remove if the temperature rises. Oversized sweaters or soft cardigans offer a casual option and can be worn wonderfully over the first layer.
#3 The outer layer: The protective shield against wind and weather
The final layer is not only crucial for the look, but also protects you from the unpredictable whims of the autumn weather. A classic trench coat is an absolute must-have in every transitional wardrobe. It is light, protects against wind and rain and adds a certain chic to any outfit.
If you prefer something sportier, you can go for a water-repellent jacket or a chic parka. Leather jackets are also very trendy again this season. Their advantage: They always look cool and can be easily combined with almost any look.
Tip: Choose a jacket that is cut a little looser so that the layers underneath have enough space and don't feel too tight.
#4 Accessories: The finishing touch to the look
No outfit is complete without the right accessories - especially in the transitional period, when you can use hats, scarves and gloves not only to add a fashionable touch but also to protect yourself against the cold. An oversized scarf in a bold colour or a striking pattern can instantly add more expression to a simple outfit. It can also be styled flexibly: wrapped loosely around the neck, casually thrown over the shoulders or draped over the coat as a statement piece.
Hats are also making a comeback this season. A fedora or baker boy cap adds a stylish touch and protects against cool autumn winds. Fluffy fake fur hats are also really popular!
#5 Choosing the right shoes
No matter how perfect the top layers are, if the shoes don't fit, the whole outfit loses its impact. In the transitional period, Chelsea boots, loafers and elegant sneakers are the perfect choice. They keep your feet warm without looking too bulky and can be worn with both casual and more chic looks.
Ankle boots are also back in fashion this season. They are real all-rounders, especially in muted colours like brown, black or grey, and can be combined in many different ways. Also on trend: boots with wide shafts - super stylish and liven up any outfit.
Layering – the key to flexibility
Layering is simply extremely practical. If you do it right, you'll be prepared for all eventualities. The trick is to combine the different layers in such a way that they work both individually and together. This way, if the temperature suddenly rises, you can remove a layer without affecting your look.
Make sure that the layers are different lengths - this will avoid your outfit looking "buttoned up". For example, let the shirt peek out from under the sweater or the scarf fall over the coat.
With the right layers, you'll be well equipped to get through autumn in style - whether the sun is shining or a cool wind is blowing.
