Ralph Lauren dreams of California Spring Summer 2023

California Dreaming: this is the idea behind the fashion show that presented Ralph Lauren's Spring Summer 2023 collection. The brand, which has always been linked to New York, celebrates the style of the Golden State with this show, almost as if we were in a postcard: from the gold rush, to cowboys to arrive at the Hollywood of the 40s and the contemporary world .

Rather than a single narrative, we have seen a plurality of stories: the cowboys, the Gold Rush, the “Gatsby” style, the Hollywood of the 50s. In all of this, the designer has remixed many of his classics, including the polo shirt, turtleneck and knitted cashmere sweaters. For the West Coast experience, Ralph Lauren simplified the style by pairing glitzy high-waisted ivory silk shorts with a soft trench coat and raffia and leather shoes. The vacation-ready palazzo pants are made fresher with a bandeau top and white satin varsity jacket.

Ralph Lauren portrayed by Buffy Birrittella

A photo taken by Buffy Birrittella, historic creative director of Ralph Lauren in the seventies, which portrays the designer wearing a turtleneck tucked into white shorts, has been faithfully recreated on the catwalk: the result was as fantastic now as it was then. "It was the expression of an idea, a very casual but also very elegant look, timeless for me. This is the statement of intent of the show," Lauren said of that look.

Ralph Lauren paraded in a 1911 Beaux Arts mansion, now a museum, filled with 18th century European portraits, including Thomas Gainsborough's beautiful "Boy in Blue". For the show, Ralph Lauren used the splendid colonnaded terrace of the Huntingtons. "It's a beautiful place to express the combination of toughness, ease and elegance," Lauren said during Wednesday's preview. "The collection is really about the spirit of how to enjoy life, the outdoors and color."
