Ibiza in Clay: The Artisans Shaping the Island’s Ceramics
Ibiza’s ceramic tradition is deeply woven into its cultural fabric, a legacy that blends ancient techniques with contemporary creativity. Today, the island’s artisans continue to shape this rich history, crafting ceramics that reflect Ibiza’s unique spirit.
A Heritage Steeped in History
From the Phoenicians to the Romans, clay has long been integral to life on Ibiza, used for everything from practical household items to decorative art. Over centuries, local artisans developed their own distinctive styles, influenced by the island’s Mediterranean beauty and natural elements.
Artisans Breathing New Life into Tradition
The artisans of Ibiza are not only preserving this age-old craft but evolving it, keeping the island’s ceramic legacy vibrant and ever-relevant. Far more than potters, these artists are storytellers.
Ibiza’s ceramic scene thrives in workshops and studios, where a new generation of artisans is redefining the island’s clay heritage. These craftsmen are shaping a fresh narrative—one that honors raw materials, organic forms, and a deep connection to the island’s essence.
Local Artisans and Their Craft
Today, Ibiza is home to a vibrant community of ceramists who continue to work with locally sourced clay. Many still use traditional hand-molding and wood-fired kiln techniques, ensuring that each piece is imbued with a unique, handmade touch.
I’ve had the privilege of connecting with some truly inspiring ceramic artists in their studios. Their passion for the craft and deep connection to the island’s heritage shine through in every piece they create. Here, I share their stories and work.
Sculptural Forms
Yvette Spowers works intuitively, using the ancient coiling method to shape each vessel by hand. Polished with semi-precious stones and fired with sawdust and seaweed, her ceramics carry the unpredictable beauty of fire and earth organic, tactile, and timeless.
Bespoke Design
Laura de Grinyo of Ladio Ceramics merges Ibiza’s pottery traditions with a fascination for form and transformation. Trained at Sa Teulera, she now creates large-scale ceramic furniture—tables, sofas, and sculptural pieces that blur the line between function and art.
Material Exploration
Natalie Rich Fernandez brings a painterly approach to clay, blending ceramics with salvaged wood to create tactile, textured compositions. Her work spans wall murals, sculptural lighting, and ceramic installations, all showcased at her gallery, Galería También.
Wild Clay & Earthy Textures
Jeremy Perret embraces a slower craft, sourcing and processing wild clay by hand. His practice is rooted in Ibiza’s landscape, guided by traditional techniques that honour the raw, organic nature of the material. He shares this knowledge through workshops, offering a deeper connection to the land.
Island-Inspired Motifs
DB Ceramics founded by Deborah Brett unveils Ibizan Eyes, a porcelain collection inspired by the island’s talismanic symbols. Translating her hand-drawn motifs onto fine tableware, her pieces embody a blend of heritage and modernity.
Mythical Influences
Melinda Balis sculpts Tanit figures, reinterpreting Ibiza’s ancient goddess of fertility and protection. Each piece echoes the island’s mystical past, grounding history in raw, tactile forms.
Sculptural Lighting & Functional Ceramics
Samantha North founder of Earth Art Ceramics creates pieces that balance form and function. Rooted in Wabi-Sabi, her sculptural lights cast soft, shifting shadows, while her handcrafted tableware is sought after by Ibiza’s top restaurants.
Bespoke Tableware
Bartblanc Ceramics, founded by Elena Noguera-Wilson, draws inspiration from family memories and Ibiza’s rich history. Each piece carries a personal narrative, blending nostalgia with cultural heritage.
Raw Form, Organic Expression
Maria B Ceramics explores imperfection and materiality. Working with stoneware and gres, Maria crafts limited-edition pieces that naturally find their place in the island’s most refined spaces.
A Contemporary Approach
Soul Clay Ibiza, founded by Almudena Lazoya, creates pottery that balances organic forms with contemporary design. She also offers workshops, sharing her craft with others.
Large-Scale Murals
Lifelong ceramicists Miguel Cabezas & Helen Gosch specialise in bespoke, handcrafted murals. Their work, rooted in tradition yet boldly contemporary, transforms walls into textured, immersive landscapes.
Ibiza’s ceramicists continue to shape the island’s creative spirit—honouring the past, embracing the present, and crafting a timeless future.
