People of Ibiza: Laura de Grinyo
A native of Ibiza and one of the island’s most celebrated young creatives, Laura de Grinyo learnt her trade in the Sa Teulera studio founded in 1945 by the ceramicist Daifa. Inspired by music, mythology and the myth of the Mediterranean, Laura's fluid style has led to collaborations with design houses such as Loewe and Isita.
I am fascinated by metamorphosis. Between light and dark, life and death, the physical and the metaphysical. Working with clay is my way of exploring these themes and communicating with the world. My medium may be simple – earth and water from Ibiza – but I am inspired by themes that are more complex: architecture, ancient history, astrology, mythology, music, nature and the cosmos. Perhaps most of all by vibration and frequency. I play an electronic instrument called the theremin, which is played without physical contact, but instead by disrupting the electromagnetic field between two antennae. By sweeping my hands through these fields I am transforming air into sound. It is another type of metamorphosis, a link between that which we can see and that which we can only hear or feel. In the same way, my work with clay is deeply rooted in the physical world, but my mind is continually exploring other realms. I’ve been inherently creative since I was child, but it wasn’t until I found pottery that I connected with my deepest state of being. Ibiza has an ancient and noble history of ceramics and as an ibicenca I feel humbled to be continuing in the lineage of my ancestors.’
