In-Between Ibiza, a new contemporary art gallery situated within the centre of Dalt Vila, bridges the gap between tradition and modernity. In-Between Gallery will present a programme of artists whose work reflects the island’s vibrant, free-spirited identity and matches the energy of the creative community.  Strengthening the relationship between artist and gallery lies at the centre of In-Between’s ethos. Inspired by the richness of Ibiza’s cultural landscape, the space will be anything but minimalist. As a community-orientated venture, the relationship between artists and viewers will be at the core of the gallery’s mission. Working alongside their needs, In-Between will nurture a collaborative relationship with their artists, placing them at the centre of their practice, and the vibrant community of Ibiza. ‘

The gallery opens with an exhibition of the work of artist Kara Marshall, whose imaginative, playful designs are inspired by 70s pop culture, Western movies, vintage pornography, galloping horses, wanton women, and cowboys, beautifully translated into watercolour paintings.

L’OFFICIEL IBIZA spoke to Kara about what it means to be showing in Ibiza for the first time.

LOI: How did your art practice develop?

KM: I originally started with tufting in lockdown. I just had my baby and needed a creative outlet after years of modelling and being in the fashion industry I thought I would give rug making (tufting) a go. Swiftly moving to painting I discovered the love of watercolour after my fiancé bought me a watercolour art set as a gift in 2021. I fell in love with playing with the layers and movement that watercolours can create.

LOI: What is your inspiration?

KM: Hardworking women - it’s the most powerful thing to see, especially working mums.

LOI: You use a lot of 'Wild West' iconography - what influences that?

KM: I get asked this question a lot and I can honestly say I have no idea how it all started with the cowboy theme running in my work. I just think horses are so powerful and beautiful to look at.

LOI: How do you access your creative flow? Is it a space? Music? A certain time of day?

KM: I have an art studio on Broadway Market in East London. It’s my happy place - I love to play a station called Reverberation Radio - it has the dreamiest music to paint to and I’ve discovered some of my favourite songs listening to this. It gets me set for the day. I also am a big candle lover and I always have candles and intense burning throughout my day.

LOI: Why did you choose to exhibit in Ibiza?

KM: I feel Ibiza is a great fit for my media as it’s a dreamy island and I feel my watercolours reflect the essence of the island.
