My Island: gallerist and art curator Sarah Suco Torres

Each week, one of Ibiza’s most fascinating residents shares their tips on where to eat, drink, play and discover the unseen side of the island.

Gallerist Sarah Suco Torres was born in Brussels and has travelled the world studying art and philosophy. The former Perrotin staffer worked in blue-chip contemporary art galleries in New York, Brussels, and Paris before moving to Ibiza to open pop-up gallery Can Garita. This year sees her launch an art residency programme at Santa Gertrudis’ Las Cicadas. ‘Following my first stay in Ibiza, I was completely taken by the charm of this island, where energy and tranquillity coexist’, says Torres. ‘I was enchanted by the nature and by the local architecture, which fuses function and symbolism to hypnotic effect.’

  1. Bar Can Toni, Ca Na Negreta

Because it's about tapas and authenticity. Sincerity is the best policy! When I go there it reminds me the canteen at school where you waited with your number on the table.

  1. Ses Margalides, San Antonio

A sporty outdoor location in the northwest of the island where you get everything at once: hiking, climbing, nature, sunset, ... and a surprise swim at the end of the trip.

  1. Casa Kaufman, Ibiza Town

Architecture is one of the reasons why I fell in love with the island. This iconic house designed by Erwin Broner, represents for me, a beautiful dialogue between Ibizan architecture and modernity.

  1. Punta Galera

It’s difficult to describe the feeling of Punta Galera, where magic, serenity and mystery coexist. The jagged rocks invite you to dive in the beautiful water and swim far from shore. I can while away hours at this place, where the immensity of the nature is a show in itself.

  1. Ses12Naus - La Carpintería

Contemporary art has always been an important part of my life. When I’m on the island, I love to enjoy the things I cannot find in the city but visiting exhibitions is always a plus. Especially when programme is strong, international and presented in a former carpenter's workshop.

  1. Los Enamorados

As they say... It's all about love! Going to this beautiful boutique hotel is like travelling through time and space – a visual explosion of styles, colours and shapes. The curated mix creates a unique and vibrant space to hang out, have a sip, a swim, find a gem at the store. There is fascinating dialogue between the authentic architecture and the curation, it's a truly ambitious design experience!

  1. Poblado Fenicio de sa Caleta

I love to spend time at the casetes de pescadores and explore the archaeological sites here – it’s the best way to understand the history of Ibiza. Sa Caleta is very important to me as it’s where I launched my first project on the island, Can Garita: a contemporary art gallery presented in Ibiza’s vernacular architecture.

Art museums represent both the future and the past and Ibiza’s contemporary art museum is a great example of this. The historic Old Town museum highlights the importance of both local and international talent in Ibiza’s artistic heritage, with a fabulous collection featuring works by Grupo Ibiza ‘59, Antoni Tàpies, Julio Le Parc and Erwin Bechtold. I love to wander here alone to remind myself why I fell in love with Ibiza.
