Christmas is often a time when indulgence takes centre stage. Combine festive excesses with seasonal bugs making the rounds, and it’s no surprise that our health and well-being can suffer. Supplements can be particularly helpful during this period. Evidence-based, high-quality supplements have the potential to make a noticeable difference in how well you feel throughout the festive season.

SUPPORT YOUR IMMUNE HEALTH

Vitamin C and zinc are vital for immune system function, helping your body defend against infections. High-dose vitamin C has shown promise as a safe and effective therapy for viral respiratory infections. If you feel like you’re coming down with something, dose up on vitamin C.

Vitamin D deficiency is surprisingly common, even in sunny locations like Ibiza. During autumn and winter months, we’re all advised to take a supplement. Lack of vitamin D is associated with weakened immunity and a greater risk of infections like coughs and colds.

For more insight, read my guide: Think you can’t be vitamin D deficient if you live in Ibiza? Think again.

BOOST YOUR ENERGY LEVELS

B vitamins play a key role in converting food into energy, and a high-quality B vitamin complex can noticeably boost energy levels.

In addition to weakened immunity, fatigue is another tell-tale sign of low vitamin D levels. If you’re feeling persistently low on energy despite good sleep, it’s worth checking your vitamin D levels, as well as iron, B12, and folate.

Of course, prioritising sleep is essential too. Take an afternoon siesta or schedule time for a lie in if you know you’re likely to have a late night.

PROTECT YOUR LIVER

If you’re likely to be enjoying a festive drink, consider supplements like milk thistle and antioxidants. Antioxidants protect cells from free radical damage caused by alcohol, while milk thistle is well-researched for its liver-protective properties. Incorporating these supplements into your routine is well worth it if you’re consuming more alcohol than usual.

HELP YOUR GUT COPE

The Christmas season can take its toll on gut health, often causing bloating and discomfort.

Broad spectrum digestive enzyme supplements can assist in breaking down large or hard-to-digest meals. Take one with your first bite to aid digestion.

For those prone to constipation, festive habits can worsen the problem. Avoid harsh laxatives and opt for a gentler solution like triphala, a natural remedy that’s both effective and easy on the system. Take the dose stated on the packaging before bed and remember to stay hydrated.

While supplements can offer support, they are no substitute for a balanced diet. Amidst the festive fun, be sure to include plenty of vegetables, stay hydrated, and get outdoors for regular walks. If you’re in the Balearics, consider taking a stroll along the island’s stunning coastline for a moment of calm.
