Favourite: Calarena swimsuits
Launched in 2004, the Corsican brand has made a name for itself in the women's swimwear market with its style that exudes the Mediterranean dolce vita . L'OFFICIEL met the designers behind Calarena to discover the next key trends in their summer collection, to shop now.
Soft skin material, second skin touch, discretion of the seams, varied shades, unique colour scheme... If Calarena stands out on the beachwear market, it's not for nothing: the Corsican swimwear brand has made its ingenious cuts and its models — sometimes timeless, sometimes ultra trendy — its signature for more than fifteen years. Between renewal, innovation, cutting-edge craftsmanship and respect for strong values: the label has established itself as a concept, an art of living inseparable from a chic summer by the water, but also an essential — all women who have tasted to the quality of a Calarena bikini that can't be turned back.
L'OFFICIEL discussed the identity of the brand, its novelties and key pieces for the 2023 season during an exclusive interview.
THE OFFICIAL: You said a few years ago that your Calarena brand was "a fashion house, but it is also and above all an art of living in the Mediterranean and obviously in Corsica. It is in this environment that we convey through our creations which accompany women in this way of life. This gentle rhythm of life that we love... Corsica is an invitation to the 'dolce vita', it invites to sharing, to moments with family and between friends, it's a matter of continuous rhythm between the times of the day and the evening between seaside but also mountain, and it must be said it is also a great call to epicureanism "... Would you define still today Calarena like this?
We are obviously always very inspired by our island, Corsica, but also by all the influences that come to us from the multiple Mediterranean horizons, especially Italy. La Dolce Vita, this art of living imbued with aesthetics and sophistication all in simplicity is an integral part of the DNA of the house. Our role, according to us, remains to accompany the Woman through refined and authentic creations, with recognizable know-how, and above all, adapted to a certain sweetness of life specific to the Mediterranean coasts. We dream of intoxicating scenes with fascinating aesthetics, and it is through these that we imagine the Woman dressed in Calarena, in summer, wearing our collections with elegance to experience delicious moments of sharing.
LO: Tell us about your summer collection, what are your new items?
Each year we develop new accessories that bring a certain value to our models, and we also come to work a lot on the materials that we just lacquer, for example, or combine with lurex mixtures to give them more luminosity and density. This year, we have focused on a 70's dolce vita spirit, and have developed a series of tone-on-tone rings which we believe is the essential collection theme this year, representative of the general inspiration of the 'year. Also, like every year, we honor a chain which remains our emblematic accessory, each year we develop a new chain, but also an accessory worked by hand encrusted with pearls produced by a French workshop. Once again, we attach great importance to know-how, as well as to the quality of the materials and materials used... This is an endemic priority at our house. And of course, our print which each season is unique. Our different colors are found there in a tasty mix that sets the tone of the collection between sea and land. It is reminiscent of both land and sea Mediterranean settings, giving everyone the opportunity to have their own vision, like a work of art.
THE OFFICIAL: We particularly noticed your red- orange swimsuit worn by a model with a diving mask. Can you tell us about its peculiarities?
This is an essential model of the House, you can find it every year declined in the different colours of the season. Very graphic with its cutout on the belly and its bustier shape, it is very popular with our customers since it is also ultra comfortable with very good fit. In the photo, it is played in a toweling material and in a very bright colour, our STARFISH orange, which brings a very James Bond girl look to the silhouette.
THE OFFICIAL: Calarena is a story of sisters ( Marie-Luce de Rocca Serra, co-founder and her sister Sandrine Piergigli). Who does what?
It's a story of sisters and above all well-developed teamwork. Marie-Luce de Rocca Serra in the management oversees the entire organization of the company with a master hand and takes care more particularly of the administrative and management part. Sandrine Giraschi Piergigli devotes herself more to the creative side as Artistic Director. But you should know that all the decisions and directions followed by the brand stem from a real balance and agreement between the two designers.
THE OFFICIAL: Very attached to your island, Calarena is a committed brand. In what concrete way?
We believe that each actor on the island is necessarily committed to the latter. For several years, Calarena has been an internationally renowned brand, and therefore, by this fact, the brand contributes to the influence of Corsica through its creations and its history. We have always communicated about our origins, we promote a very qualitative image of Corsica, and thereby hope to raise awareness around the richness of its heritage and the beauty of its resources which inspire us again and again.
L'OFFICIEL: Your lifestyle develops from season to season, evening dress and large printed trousers. What are your strong pieces of the season?
Our main goal is to accompany the Woman until the evening around creations thought and elaborated to make her elegant in all circumstances. Every year we try to develop models of beachwear that are both practical and elegant to wear by the sea, but also on fabulous summer evenings. This year, the Carol skirt translates this spirit very well, you can easily put it on over the matching swimsuit for a very refined style, for every moment of the day, just like the Disco pants which mark more the spirit 70's of the year.
L'OFFICIEL: You collaborated with Gigi Ramatuelle, what will be your collaborations this summer?
We do not multiply the collaborations so as not to drown each of the collaborations and above all, our current collection. We are only collaborating with Gigi Ramatuelle this year, which also fits very well into our general inspirational thread since this collaboration highlights the Mediterranean art of living, between epicureanism and Italian chic! It is a collaboration that aims to embark women by the sea, on the coasts of Italy via an exacerbated culture of refinement under the qualifier "Alla Grande!". And we have our long-lasting collaborations that we present each year to expand our collections around the art of living with our home fragrances in collaboration with the Corsican brand Isula Parfum , our sun oil with the house Nucca or our bags and kits. beach with François Regnier . These are collaborations that are an integral part of our collection. We try to surround ourselves with people with recognized creative know-how in their profession.
