Cannes Film Festival 2025, the films of the 78th edition: everything you need to know

The spotlight is on: Cannes 2025 is ready to begin. From May 13 to 24, the Croisette will once again be the beating heart of international cinema. Laurent Lafitte will be the host for the opening and closing nights of the 78th edition, while actress Juliette Binoche will preside over the Jury.

From May 13 to 24 , Cannes will once again be the beating heart of world cinema . Laurent Lafitte , who takes over from Camille Cottin , will host the opening and closing nights. The Jury will be presided over by Juliette Binoche , an icon of French auteur cinema and winner of an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for The English Patient in 1997. Exactly forty years after her first Montée des Marches with Rendez-vous by André Téchiné , Binoche will take over from American director Greta Gerwig , the fourth woman to lead the Jury in the long history of the Cannes Film Festival , after Olivia de Havilland, Sophia Loren and Gerwig .

Valeria Golino, Matilda De Angelis and Elodie in the cast of the only Italian film in competition at Cannes 2025.

In competition for the Palme d'Or , the only Italian film, is "Fuori" , the new film by director Mario Martone that tells a significant episode in the life of the writer Goliarda Sapienza , played by Valeria Golino . Actress and director who recently directed the acclaimed Sky series based on Goliarda Sapienza's most famous novel, The Art of Joy . After an unexpected gesture that lands her in prison, Sapienza forms deep friendships with some young inmates. Once released, these women continue to hang out, experiencing an intense and transformative Roman summer. The cast of the film that we will see in May on the Montée des Marches also includes Matilda De Angelis and Elodie . Two Italian films in the Un Certain Regard category . A western by directors Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppis , which recalls the legendary figure of Buffalo Bill , played by John C. Reilly , in the film "Testa o croce?" . And the debut feature film by director Francesco Sossai , "Le città di pianura" , an intimate and contemplative road movie that crosses contemporary Italy, in its fragilities and its landscapes.

While Joaquin Phoenix plays a sheriff in Ari Aster's "Eddington," a western set during the pandemic - which also features Pedro Pascal and Emma Stone -, actress Scarlett Johansson makes her directorial debut with "Eleanor the Great," presented in the Un Certain Regard section. The film tells the story of Eleanor, played by ninety-five-year-old June Squibb , who, after the disappearance of her best friend, moves to New York to start over. In competition for the Palme d'Or, Wes Anderson presents "The Phoenician Scheme" , starring Benicio Del Toro as Zsa-Zsa Korda, a daring millionaire embroiled in a spy adventure. As is tradition, Anderson assembles an all-star cast, including Mia Threapleton , Michael Cera , Tom Hanks , Scarlett Johansson , Bryan Cranston , Jeffrey Wright and Benedict Cumberbatch .

Robert De Niro to Receive Honorary Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival 2025.

During the opening ceremony of the 78th Cannes Film Festival on May 13, 2025 , American actor, director and producer Robert De Niro will receive the Honorary Palme d'Or for Lifetime Achievement . This prestigious award comes 14 years after De Niro presided over the festival's jury in 2011. The actor from The Godfather , Taxi Driver and Novecento expressed deep gratitude for the honor, highlighting the role of the Cannes Film Festival as a meeting point for storytellers , filmmakers , film enthusiasts and friends , in an era often marked by divisions. " I deeply love the Cannes Film Festival. Especially now that there are so many things in the world that distance us, Cannes unites us." The following day, Wednesday, May 14 , De Niro will hold a masterclass open to the public on the stage of the Théâtre Debussy , offering spectators a unique opportunity to delve into his extraordinary career and his approach to acting .

Tom Cruise will present the final chapter of Mission Impossible out of competition: it will be his third time on the Croisette

On the same day, the Grand Théâtre Lumière will host the out-of-competition screening of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning , the highly anticipated final chapter in the saga starring Tom Cruise . Ethan Hunt , played by Cruise since 1996 , leads his IMF team on a final mission full of tension and adrenaline, which promises to leave the audience breathless . The American actor and producer will be present on the red carpet of the Palais des Festivals alongside director Christopher McQuarrie and the cast, including Vanessa Kirby and Mariela Garriga . It will be Tom Cruise's third appearance on the Croisette , after the premiere of Far and Away in 1992 and that of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022 , for which he also received an honorary Palme d'Or .
