Chanel: Cruise 2025 fashion show at the Cité radieuse
The Chanel Cruise fashion show was held at MAMO, Center d'art de la Cité radieuse in Marseille. The collection imagined by Virginie Viard is a tribute to life at sea: with diving hoods, sparkling embroidery, straw hats, flatform flip-flops, sequined jackets for the evening and swimsuits.
If Gabrielle Chanel revolutionized the way women dress, Le Corbusier changed the way of life of many people. Could this be why the maison chose La Cité Radieuse in Marseille as the set for the Chanel Cruise 2024-25 fashion show? The Cité Radieuse, Le Corbusier's 'vertical village' of 337 apartments with its distinctive façade featuring colourful circuit boards, was built in response to the city's post-war shortage of social housing and is an architectural icon as well as a city reference. Virginie Viard, the creative director of Chanel, chose it to represent the "very strong sense of freedom... and representation of everyday life" in Marseille.
The looks of the show have more than ever an accent on the everyday and represent the ideal holiday wardrobe: from the look for the beach with shorts and large crochet cardigans (which act as a swimsuit cover-up) to the flip-flop slippers with wedge, to the boater-style straw hat, leather tank top and shorts, broderie anglaise suits, even a bathrobe that becomes an elegant robe manteau, or coat-dress with terry cloth lapels. It continues with long cotton dresses for the aperitif and one-piece or two-piece costumes worn with a cascade of pearls, jewels with charms and bows à la Robespierre for the blouses. An accessory that leaves its mark? The double C in metal with chain that is worn like a bag, even if in reality it is just decoration. The inevitable tweed in bright colours such as green and yellow or in the classic black and white, large necklaces where the checked pattern recalls that of fishermen's nets with micro charms with starfish and sea creatures. Translucent elements such as metallic leather jackets and shorts, as well as bucket bags and hoodies.
