H&M Joins the 2024 Met Gala with Custom Celebrity Looks
The brand made its fashionable return at the Met Gala carpet with custom designs for Awkwafina, Paloma Elsesser, Adwoa Aboah, Quannah Chasinghorse, Hari Nef, and Stefon Diggs.
Celebrities from all over the world have come together for the 2024 Met Gala, all donning beautiful looks in line with the theme “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” and dress code “The Garden of Time”. This year’s exhibition has inspired H&M to reawaken their roots and look into their archives to create beautiful custom looks for Awkwafina, Paloma Elsesser, Adwoa Aboah, Quannah Chasinghorse, Hari Nef, and Stefon Diggs. Drawing on the femininity of the late 40s and 50s fashion, H&M makes a fashionable return at the Met Gala carpet with dramatic, embellished ensembles in soft, romantic hues.
“This year’s theme allowed us to create modern, one-of-a-kind designs inspired by our company’s rich heritage, worn to stunning effect by our guests,” - Ann-Sofie Johansson, Head of Womenswear Design and Creative Advisor at H&M
Awkwafina graced the Met Gala carpet wearing a custom gown that draws directly on an archival “Hennes” wedding dress, with a hand-embroidered off-the-shoulder neckline and a tulip skirt silhouette featuring a high slit in luxurious cream silk-zibeline.
Paloma Elsesser wore a custom two-piece set consisting of a 3D-printed metallic bodice electroformed in an oxidized green colour. It’s also embellished with 3D-printed calla lily flowers made by Michael Schmidt Studios. The bodice is paired with a beautiful champagne-coloured silk taffeta skirt with a bubble hem.
Adwoa Aboah also donned a gorgeous custom two-piece set inspired by contemporary femininity. The top comprises a capelet made with red silk organza with tulle ruffles resembling petals, draped over a bralette embroidered with rhinestones. It is then paired with a modern voluminous bubble-hem skirt in red silk taffeta.
Quannah Chasinghorse wore a custom silk-satin gazar gown in forget-me-not-blue, with its ballerina-length silhouette drawing inspiration from the grace of a flower in bloom and its colour honouring her homeland Alaska’s state flower. The actress-model accessorized her look with a beaded floral belt and earrings all made by Indigenous designer Heather Dickson of Dickson Designs.
Hari Nef walked down the Met Gala carpet wearing a gorgeous custom column gown channeling old-school opulence and timeless romance. It is created with a waist-cinching silhouette in creamy taffeta layered with translucent and mother-of-pearl style paillettes and sequins. Completing the look is a beautiful oversized cream taffeta bow with a modern liquid organza sheen, secured at the back and left to trail poetically.
Stefon Diggs wore a custom double-breasted blazer designed with strong shoulders and exaggerated lapels paired with wide-leg trousers all in relaxed tailoring. The set’s louche silhouette in midnight-blue crushed velvet creates the perfect mix of athleticism and elegance.
