John Galliano leaves Maison Margiela
After ten years at the helm of Renzo Rosso's fashion house, British designer John Galliano is stepping down as creative director of Maison Margiela.
An open letter published on Instagram announced John Galliano 's farewell to Maison Margiela . "Today is the day I say goodbye to Maison Margiela," wrote the British designer who has been at the creative helm of the fashion house founded by Martin Margiela for ten years. "My heart overflows with joy and gratitude, and my soul smiles. Today I turn 14—14 years of sobriety," Galliano continued, opening up about his private life, "I live a better life than I ever dreamed."
In the next passage, with almost sibylline words, understandable only to those who are close to the designer, he speaks of the "voices...". "Everyone wants to know, and everyone wants to dream. When the time is right, everything will be revealed. For now, I take this moment to express my immense gratitude. I continue to atone, and I will never stop dreaming. I need to dream too ." A series of sentences that seem to anticipate his next role as creative director who will indeed "make people dream", to use his words.
And the mind immediately runs to Chanel , where the role of creative director is vacant following the departure of Virginie Viard . Or to Dior , where his return - he directed the fashion house from 1996 to 2010 - would be more than sensational.
Galliano expressed deep gratitude to his team as well as the muses who “inspire me in everything I do. You are my life. I want to celebrate the genderless collections we produce and the support they have found, the films and shows we have created. They all center diversity, individuality, trans rights, queer rights, gender equality in the workplace, anti-racism and mental health advocacy. This is the moment when the family—the fashion industry—is at its best. Look at what we have built.”
Renzo Rosso , president of the OTB Group, said that «working with John has been one of the most significant and impactful experiences of my life. He mentored me and showed me his vision, enriching me culturally and allowing me to bring some of that vision and culture to the rest of the Group». The entrepreneur who leads one of the largest luxury groups, which includes Maison Margiela, Diesel, MM6, Marni, Jil Sander and Viktor & Rolf, said he felt «privileged to have worked with two legends like Martin and John. Martin made the Maison a reference and an icon, John made it the most avant-garde couture house in the world. Over the last 10 years, he, the Maison Margiela team and all the resources of the Group have worked together to create magic and write a fundamental chapter of this unique fashion house». 10 years that have laid the foundations for the future of the fashion house.
