Victoria Beckham: “I want to help women be the best version of themselves”
To mark the release of the co-created VBxMango collection, the British designer – who recently celebrated her 50th birthday – took part in an interview.
LO: VBxMango will certainly be the most sought-after collaboration this spring. How would you describe it in 3 words?
Victoria Beckham: Sensual, thoughtful and feminine.
LO: The two brands interact in complete transparency on this collection, each adding their own essence to the result. How did you and your team approach the collaboration between the two brands?
VB: I really wanted to speak to a wider audience in a way that fits my brand and maintains my aesthetic and my DNA, and I'm very proud of what we created together. It's very modern to bring the two brands together and draw on our expertise, and I was very impressed by the level of execution, attention to detail and know-how of the Mango teams. It was an exciting challenge to embrace a different creative process without compromising on creativity and desirability. I also think we share the same ethics, aesthetics and values around femininity, quality and a true love of the product.
LO: When creating this collection, what types of references did you have in mind?
VB: I wanted to create a modern and conscious wardrobe, perfect for the summer months. There is impertinence, but it is also very well put together with a certain sensuality. I was inspired by the iconic French film “La Piscine”, but more particularly by the character of Jane Birkin and her ease. She is very feminine and has a real sense of freedom.
LO: What are the character traits and personality of the VBxMango woman?
VB: She is a woman who has many facets. It's not about being just one type of woman, but for me it's really about making the people who wear my collections feel empowered and be the best version of themselves- same.
LO: What pieces do you consider to be the most representative of this collection, as well as your favourites?
VB: I really like dresses that are easy to put on and tailoring. I have always played with the feminine and masculine and I want to offer a feminine wardrobe that is effortless, versatile and wearable, but anchored in modernity with sophisticated ease. A garment may seem simple, but the way it fits the body, the way it creates a strong silhouette, has gone through careful thought and execution.
LO: From your days as a pop star to today, your influence resonates. Many young girls of the time wear your creations today.
VB: I've always wanted to help women feel like the best version of themselves, because when that is the case, they can cope with anything!
LO: You and your husband, David Beckham , have always remained at the top, as one of the most iconic couples in decades. What is your secret?
VB: Family is everything to me. I love and am passionate about what I do, and I am so grateful to my family for supporting me every step of the way. David is a very kind person, an amazing father and husband, we continually laugh and have a good time together.
LO: What do you think are some of the wrong things people assume about you?
VB: That I’m not smiling! The truth is that I take what I do very seriously, but not myself, I like to laugh!
