Vivienne Westwood, the Sex Pistols and the origins of punk fashion

Behind the legendary punk image of the Sex Pistols was the design vision of Vivienne Westwood.

Vivienne Westwood queen of fashion and punk

As disco and rock and roll flourished in the 1970s, the underground subgenre of punk was a rising phenomenon . The youth counterculture across the UK wanted to disturb the peace of English society, doing so by playing loud music, wearing what were then considered outrageous clothing and make-up, and expressing revolutionary sentimentality through their individuality where appropriate . If anyone represents 70s punk, it's the English band Sex Pistols ; the leaders Johnny Rotten (John Lydon) and Sid Vicious (John Simon Ritchie).

British designer Vivienne Westwood 's Sex shop (stylized as SEX) was the center of punk fashion throughout the '70s , providing the tangible pieces to create a look and the intangible element of shock and controversy that punks wished to emulate. . Between the fetish clothing and the vulgar name itself, the store stood out among the other businesses in the prestigious King's Road shopping destination. Since her former partner Malcolm McLaren co-founded the shop with her and ran the Sex Pistols, it made sense for Westwood to become the band's supplier.

Sex was located at 430 King's Road in London. Now it's World's End, featuring archival fashion pieces from Westwood's past and current collections.

Ripped T-shirts, bondage pants, queen graphics and punk accessories   are some of Westwood 's most notable designs seen on the Sex Pistols and other such artists. As his designs gained greater visibility among figures in subcultural movements, from punk to new wave, what we now know as punk fashion can be largely attributed to the work of Westwood . A pioneer in bringing environmental and social activism to subversive clothing, Westwood's interpretation of the punk aesthetic has always been a visual expression of the heretical lifestyle and rhetoric of insurgents.

Punk remains an important fashion and cultural collective, whether through a modern mode of expression or nostalgic reflection. Westwood's work is considered historically significant, and his anti-establishment mindset is even more timely than before.

The fashion designer died on December 29, 2022 at the age of 81, but it is clear that her legacy continues and will continue to be present. Goodbye, Vivienne Westwood.
