Favorites: The Sculptures, Ceramics and Paintings of Angelina Guez
The Parisian visual artist Angélina Guez surprises with her solar paintings, her astonishing sculptures and colorful ceramics.
What is the concept that characterizes your work?
I don't have a concept... Creating is part of me. My hands go beyond my words, they guide me to paint, to sculpt. I work with my heart! I have always wanted to do this job without having had a painting or a sculpture as a model... However, many works marked me when I was young, in particular the painting "nude au plateau de sculpteur" by Pablo Picasso, the sculpture "head of a woman" by Modigliani, the ceramic "face with two hands" by Fernand Leger, and of course Matisse: I have always been in love with him. I love everything, its colors, its portraits, its shapes...
Where does your inspiration come from then?
I love flowers, the sun, the sea, butterflies... Man. The latter enchant me to create characters around them. But music is dementia for me! I paint, sculpt and dance in rhythm with my brushes. Chet baker, Bill Evans, Luiz Bonfa, Bob Marley, Ella Fitzgerald, Ibrahim Ferrer, Claude Nougaro, Rita Payés, Joâo Gilberto, Serge Gainsbourg, Ruben Gonzalez, Buena Vista Social Club, Natalia Lafourcade, Silvia Perez Cruz, Yves Montand.. ., as well as my Dad's compositions… These inspire me to compose in color.
Precisely, the color is omnipresent, what does it get you?
Color is a feeling. I compose in color. Those are my emotions that guide me to choose them... I let them come to me... I dance and sing with the colors. I try just as much to get to know them, to come into harmony with them, to create my own colors.
A place that enchants you?
Barcelona is also an inspiration booster. It's my city of heart, every time I set foot there, I have a compulsive desire to create. Strolling through the pedestrian streets of Gracia, going to the Picasso museum, contemplating the sea... sharing tapas with my family.
Has the current context influenced your art? Played on your creativity?
I don't feed on it to make my art... I try to stay positive, to see the good side of life to shine as much as possible and to spread joy through my work. On the other hand, during this period, I created twice. I was six months pregnant, exploring a lot, making collages, filling my sketchbooks, laughing, dancing, and cooking with my son and my husband. M y son Joseph also inspires me a lot: we draw and do modeling together.
Where can we admire your work?
In my studio! Come and see my winter garden, I flower the dead leaves there so they don't get carried away...
