What is Quiet Luxury?

Quiet Luxury is the term used to indicate the new trend characterized by garments of extreme value and quality, with timeless aesthetics and produced by luxury brands. Primarily used in America to describe a real lifestyle genre, which extends to homes, cars and vacations, for some it's not just a trend, but a way of life in its own right.

The result of months of micro trends like old money , preppy , minimalism and normcore – think Barbie pink and balletcore – have given visibility today to the Quiet Luxury trend.

It's a trend that comes and goes, and while it grew in the wake of the pandemic, it has its roots in 19th-century American industrialists and 1700s France. Retailers are taking note, as are more and more of designers who try to capture not only the rich, but also the would-be.

After the pandemic, fashion focused on valuing clothing items that stood the test of time and were considered real investments. An idea also parallel to that of buying fewer clothes and therefore investing in more resistant and versatile garments. Over time there was the minimalist aesthetic of the 1990s, when Donna Karan and Miuccia Prada made practical dressing fashionable, and a display of stealthy wealth during the 2008-2009 recession. Over the years the champions of this style, trend, which seems more like a phenomenon to tell the truth, have been the Olsen twins with their brand The Row who made it popular with brands that already made it an ethos: Max Mara, Jil Sander, Ralph Lauren or Burberry (it was Christopher Bailey).

GWYNETH PALTROW, SUCCESSION AND ANATOMY OF A SCANDAL

The understated aesthetic of Quiet Luxury was perfectly exemplified at the intersection of two much-discussed recent cultural moments: in the new season's “Succession” a conspicuously oversized Burberry tote covered in a logoless brand plaid and Gwyneth Paltrow's wardrobe in court.

Another series that presents the Quiet Luxury trend is " Anatomy Of A Scandal" where the protagonist Sienna Miller wears relaxed garments with a minimal design, but with highly exclusive details and fabrics.

Just think of Hollywood baby and Goop multi-millionaire Gwyneth Paltrow who during her week in a Utah courtroom over a dispute over a skiing accident wore Prada pieces and luxe cashmere sweaters and Celine boots. The clean image created by neutral tones has allowed those who know luxury to identify the big brands that were hidden behind her look: without logos and not "screamed".

At its core, Quiet Luxury has many of the same hallmarks of the "classic": well-crafted, understated pieces of clothing that don't scream where they come from, but which unobtrusively communicate a low-key, yet undeniably high-end elegance . It's about combining a coat from an emblazoned brand with baggy, vintage jeans; to wear several shades of beige at the same time; an expensive watch peeking out from under the cuff of a thick cream sweater. It is about favouring quality over quantity and having an instinctive style and the certainty of investing in garments that last over time. The birth, but above all the development, of this new lifestyle has been made possible by brands that have laid the foundations for a sober fashion for a select few. First of all The Row , the brand designed by the Olsen twins , professionals in the field of basic but cool looks. Then followed by many others such as Jil Sander , Khaite and Bevza . Examples of Italian Quiet Luxury are Loro Piana , Zegna , Ferragamo , Max Mara , Bottega Veneta , Armani and Tod's . In any case, this is to say that quiet luxury has always been among us, it has only changed its name from minimal luxury to tranquil.

HEAD MUST

Among the must-have items of Quiet Luxury, a classic trench coat cannot be missing in the wardrobe, ready to accompany us on any occasion. It's perfect for a business meeting, a coffee with a friend, a romantic outing or a walk in the park: with this look it will be impossible to go wrong. It can be worn at any age, whether you are at the beginning of your career or want to go out in your free time. The trench coat is a must-have also because it adapts to all body types. The classic beige can be replaced by khaki or cream, which are the trendiest colours of this season, but shades of black or dark blue are also always current at any time of the year.
