The evolution of Billie Eilish's music and style

Take a look at how the singer has transformed from the release of her first song "Ocean Eyes" in 2015 to now.

The evolution of Billie Eilish's music and style

Billie Eilish has always been a powerful force . From the release of her song "Ocean Eyes" to "NDA," the singer has taken the alternative electronic scene by storm, and at such a young age. She began working in music with her brother, Finneas O'Connell , at age 13, and It wasn't long before "Ocean Eyes" went viral on SoundCloud in 2015. Now 21, Eilish has continually reinvented herself through each album release, both through her sound and her style. Every song on Do n't Smile at Me , When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, and Happier Than Ever has sounded different, but they all feature the hallmarks of Eilish's sound : the ASMR qualities of her voice, an electronic production alternative, perfectly aligned background vocals, the vocoder, a production tool used to synthesize a recorded voice that allows you to achieve a wobbly, low-pitched voice on some of your songs.

With her style, Eilish came across as more conservative. During the early years of her career, she crafted her image to avoid comment on her body through her trademark baggy pants, boots, oversized T-shirts, puffer jackets, beanies, and various hair color changes. But now, the singer has reinvented her look by wearing exactly what she wants , like on the June 2021 British Vogue cover when she rocked lingerie and heels for the shoot. Eilish still sports her long acrylic nails and baggy clothes from time to time, but it's clear that she's completely transformed.

Here, L'OFFICIEL looks at the evolution of his music and style throughout each stage of his career from 2015 to now.

Don't smile at me

Eilish came roaring out of the gates in 2017 with her debut EP, Don't Smile at Me . After going viral on SoundCloud, “Ocean Eyes” was officially part of this EP on streaming services, in addition to eight other songs produced and written with his brother. Establishing himself as an upcoming star, these songs featured electronic production and unique lyrics , such as “I want to be alone / Alone with you, does that make sense? / I want to steal your soul / And hide you in my treasure chest” in his song “Hostage” .

other Notable tracks on Don't Smile at Me are "Idonwannabeyouanymore" , a bluesy piano-based track with suspenseful seven chords, a tripled time signature for a waltz-like feel and lyrics filled with deep meaning, and " myboy" . another jazz track with some improvised vocal riffs, electric piano and synths. Then there's "Watch" and "&Burn" , which contain the exact same lyrics but couldn't sound more different. "Watch" is the more delicate version, with piano and a lighter beat, while "&Burn" is darker, with a heavier beat, plus a speaking/singing lead vocal from Eilish and a rapped bridge from Vince Staples.

When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

He took a darker turn in 2019 with the release of Eilish's debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? . "Bad Guy", perhaps Eilish's best-known song to date, was the album's fifth single and her first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. It contains more sexual lyrics than the first album, as well as stronger bass and EDM-inspired instrumental breaks, this song changed her image from a pre-teen singer to a moody, moody teen , also seen on "My Strange Addiction" and "Bury a Friend" . "You Should See Me in a Crown" and "All the Good Girls Go to Hell" amplify her voice of girl power, and "Xanny" , "When the Party's Over" and "I Love You" reveal the struggles of being a teenager. , which includes experiences of drugs, parties and heartbreak, all produced with deep bass, dance rhythms and Eilish's whispering vibrato. He even directed his first music video for "Xanny." One thing is for sure, this album has it all.

Happier Than Ever

Her 16-song album, Happier Than Ever , has been a hit, with great lyrics like those on "Lost Cause" , where Eilish sings, "I thought you had your shit under control, but damn I was wrong / You ain't nothing else What a lost cause / And this is nothing like what it once was." From the outset, it's easy to tell that Eilish lives up to the title, with "My Future" and "Lost Cause," two songs about becoming independent and focusing on herself without a relationship. “NDA” and “Therefore I Am” feature heavier electronic production and lyrics about claiming power over men and the media, while “Your Power” details how overcoming an abusive relationship . He has also self-directed several music videos for this album, including "Your Power", "Lost Cause" and "NDA". In addition to his music showing his ever-changing confidence and independence, it is also evident through his style.

Guitar Songs

In 2022, Eilish surprise released the Guitar Songs EP , which contained two new songs for her fans, "TV" and "The 30th" . On the first track, "TV," Eilish addressed current issues going on in the US , singing, "And I'll be in denial at least for a while/What about the plans we made?/The internet has gone crazy watching stars in court/While Roe v Wade is quashed." The second track is about a tragic car accident involving someone close to Eilish. Its lyrics read, "What if it happened to you on a different day?/In a bridge where there was no rail on the road?/Or a neighborhood street where little kids play?/Are you alive, are you alive, are you alive." Along with these two tracks, Eilish toured in 2022 for her album Happier Than Ever from February to September As his music continues to touch hearts, we can't wait to see what he has in store for the future.
