"You": everything we know about season 5 of the Netflix series

After four intense seasons, fans are eagerly awaiting the fifth season, which has been announced as the series' final one.

A mix of psychological thriller and romantic drama, You follows the obsessive adventures of Joe Goldberg ( Penn Badgley ), a seemingly ordinary bookseller with a disturbing tendency to stalk and manipulate the women he falls in love with. Here's everything we know about the fifth and final season of the hit series.

A final season

In March 2023, Netflix confirmed that You season 5 would be the series finale. This announcement both excited and saddened fans, as it meant that the conclusion of Joe Goldberg's story was imminent. The creators hinted that this final season would definitely bring the main character full circle.

The Return of Penn Badgley

Unsurprisingly, Penn Badgley will reprise his iconic role as Joe Goldberg for this final season. The actor has been the face of the series since the beginning, brilliantly embodying Joe's complex and troubling character. The actor has even revealed in various interviews that he has ideas for how Joe's story should end, while expressing his gratitude to fans for their continued support.

The possible plot

Warning spoilers

The end of Season 4 left Joe back in New York City, the place where it all began. After escaping his previous crimes and managing to forge a new identity alongside Kate, a wealthy heiress played by Charlotte Ritchie, Joe seems ready to resume his activities in the Big Apple. However, his inner demons and bloody past threaten to catch up with him. We can expect this season to further explore Joe's internal conflict between his desire for redemption and his murderous impulses.

The return of old characters?

While nothing has been confirmed, it is possible that characters from previous seasons could return in this final season. For example, Jenna Ortega , who played Ellie Alves in Season 2, has expressed interest in returning. With Joe back in New York, it is plausible that some familiar faces could resurface, creating some expected dramatic confrontations and showdowns.

The release date

Production on Season 5 began in the summer of 2024, and has now wrapped (as evidenced by Penn Badgley himself in a humorous Instagram post), suggesting a potential release date of late 2024 or early 2025 on Netflix . As with previous seasons, the series is expected to run between 8 and 10 episodes, enough to flesh out the final plot and give Joe Goldberg 's arc a satisfying conclusion.

The Future of Franchising

Although the You series is ending after season 5, some fans are speculating about the possibility of spin-offs or sequels, especially with strong secondary characters with narrative potential. As of yet, no official announcement has been made, but the creators have not ruled out the possibility of continuing to explore the You universe in another form. To be continued...
