The Mexican tradition of temazcal, or sweat lodges, is an important part of the country’s ancient culture, the use of which has gained global popularity, particularly here in Ibiza.

A sweat lodge is a ceremonial sauna found in many indigenous cultures around the world and has been used for centuries for healing, prayer, and spiritual growth. While the temazcal ceremonies that take place in Ibiza are generally Mexican in origin, variants of the sweat lodge are used by many different indigenous cultures, including the Cree, Ojibwe, Lakota, and Cheyenne. The temazacal takes place in a small, dome-shaped structure made of saplings and covered with blankets, animal hides, or canvas. Stones are heated in a fire outside the lodge, and then brought inside to create steam. Participants enter the lodge and pray, chant or meditate while sweating. The sweat lodge ceremony is a sacred ritual that is used for healing and spiritual growth, so a ceremony typically includes prayer, singing, and meditation along with the burning of sacred herbs and resins such as rosemary and copal. Ceremonies are often timed to coordinate with lunar cycles or other significant astrological events and participants may be asked to focus on a particular intention. The temazcal can be used to purify the mind, body, and spirit and is a powerful and transformative experience that can have a profoundly healing effect.
