People of Ibiza: Elena Ruíz Sastre

DIRECTOR, MUSEO DE ARTE CONTEMPORÁNEO DE IBIZA.

Elena Ruíz Sastre

Art offers us a transcendent reality which for me, is infinitely better and superior to many other things which are trivial, circumstantial or political. I care deeply about being close to art; it’s what matters the most to me. The old question about choosing between ‘bread and roses’ is misleading because art is anthropological, it is ingrained in our humanity. Humans will always create art, it’s an intrinsic part of who we are—it always has been and always will be. Since my arrival at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Ibiza (MACE) over thirty years ago, my focus has been on sharing my passion for art and dedication to the community in every aspect of the museum. As the director, I see beyond the mere display of contemporary art. I view the museum as having a crucial role in reflecting and shaping the identity of Ibiza. Art isn’t just about aesthetic pleasure. It’s a tool for societal benefit, to reflect our values, challenge our perceptions and stimulate our intellects. Art invites questions more than it provides answers. It is inquisitive, it challenges preconceived notions and encourages a dialogue between the artwork and the viewer. Our museum doesn’t impose interpretations — it offers a space for personal and collective exploration. I am committed to democratising art and ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background or abilities, can engage with our collections and exhibitions. From school children to tourists, people with physical and mental health challenges, young and old, each visitor brings their own perspective, enriching our understanding. Above all, art is a profound experience. It can educate, provoke, heal and has a transformative power. My passion for art is interlaced with a deep respect for the natural world and the pressing issues of our time. Our temporary exhibition by Santi Moix encapsulates this blend of beauty and environmental consciousness. His work is a celebration of nature’s resilience and a poignant reminder of our responsibility to protect it. It is both a tribute to the local flora of Ibiza and a commentary on the ecological challenges we face. One of the most magical aspects of art is how it unites visual perception, mental comprehension and manual skill. The combination of what my eye perceives, what my brain understands and what my hands can create is miraculous. One of the activities we propose at the museum is exactly this, because it seems a simple and unimportant process but through this exercise, our consciousness is alerted and art is understood from a new perspective. This is particularly evident in the work of Santi Moix who, as an artist of our time approaches drawing in a way reminiscent of the Renaissance, creating grand formats while addressing significant contemporary themes. Art is not just a reflection of society; it’s a vital part of its essence. I am dedicated to nurturing this connection and creating a cultural dialogue. I want art to be shared by all.'
