Can you be delicate and rigorous at the same time? The answer is yes, if Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons are designing the collection, the two creative souls of Prada who for autumn winter 2024-25 are sending a show on the catwalk where the essentiality surprises.
The setting is the same as the men's fashion show last January , a meeting between architecture and nature, on which at first sight austere models walk, dressed as they are in long black or grey jackets, combined with matching skirts. They wear almost military hats, only they are made of feathers and contrasting coloured fabrics, a first clue of what becomes reality as soon as they turn the corner, because the back part of their looks reserves unexpected glimpses.
Rustling silks, soft colours, light weights (un)dress the backs, perhaps a declaration of intent even before that of style: the Prada woman can be everything at the same time. Pragmatic and dreamy, severe and seductive, monochrome or bright, in her wardrobe for next winter contrasts meet without merging, each proud of its own identity. And then there are the sleeveless sheath dresses, some enlivened at the front by flat fringes or those which, if glimpsed so fleetingly, would be seen as bows with long hanging nocks, others crossed by raised foliage; there is body-hugging knitwear in bright colours such as yellow, pink, purple, blue; there are frock coats. As for accessories, we move from pseudo-military boots to ladylike shoes with a tapered toe and a heel that is just a hint. While the bags, with an ingenious touch of styling, hang askew from the wrist, to which they are fixed with a sort of cuff strap that holds them at one corner.
